Flor de la Noche
oil & cold wax on Cradled Panel 12" x 12" x 1.5" Through Gallery
Although the subject appears to be surrounded in darkness as if it were night, the photo reference for this piece was actually taken in deep shade. I exaggerated the seclusion to create the feeling of viewing a shadowy form with a shaft of light streaming from above, highlighting only the spectacular blossom and the tip of the cactus carrying it.
One of my favorite experiences is exploring the southwestern desert in the spring. The colors of the cactus blooms are indescribably intense, with colors that explode out of some of the most unfriendly botanicals you've ever seen! I wouldn't recommend trying to pick them unless you happen to have some thick leather gloves and some tongs. Better to enjoy them from a safe distance while taking many photos of their radiant beauty to enjoy for years to come.
